Here at Earlham we know that the children enjoy writing - from poems to facts, stories to science investigations, they can write brilliantly! The children take great pride in their writing, and challenge themselves to always improve their work. We are very proud of our writers.

We celebrate our writing heroes through our Star Writer scheme, where a writer from each class is recognised in assembly, their work is put on display, and they are awarded a book. We are very proud of the work we have done with the famous children’s author and former Children’s Laureate, Michael Rosen. Our children love poetry, they enjoy reading poems, exploring their language and structure, and writing their own poems. The children have written class books of poetry, and we even have some published poets whose work has been published in various magazines.

Persuasive Letters

Year 5 has been learning about persuasive letters. The children noticed that their local area is being swamped by fly-tipping and dog excrement so they decided to do something about it. Read their letters to Newham council.

starPoets

Our school believes that poetry is a powerful form of communication and expression and, working with Michael Rosen, the former Children’s Laureate, we have developed an approach to teaching poetry which has at its heart the belief that poetry is for everyone. Our children are encouraged to explore, play with, perform and write poetry throughout the curriculum. To commemorate the end of World War 1 the whole school explored the tragic and sometimes difficult themes around the First World War through poetry. The children learnt some of the facts about the War, and then explored the experiences of soldiers and their families through poetry. Each class chose a text and analysed, performed and explored it - our children are great poetry detectives. The children then wrote their own poems about the experience of war.

The poets published in this book are our star poets, and were awarded special certificates and prizes in assembly, and their original poems are on display in school. Congratulations to Turjo, Elsa, Sufyan, Almir, Halim, Ali, Hamida, Talha, Iman, Janan, Zion, Chloe, Riaz and Zakeriya. We are very proud of all our poets at Earlham!
