Our Design & Technology Curriculum
-
Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems;
-
Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, pupils develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world;
-
DT in our school has a real world context - our pupils are given opportunities to design objects for a purpose;
-
The children work through a cycle of design, test and refine;
-
The science and economics of healthy eating are taught alongside cooking - we want to inspire a love of cooking as a creative process as well as a life skill;
-
Children are taught to use a wide range of materials and techniques creatively to design and make products. They are taught about the work of a range of artists, architects and designers in history. Children are also given the opportunity to experiment with and increase their awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
Covid adaptations to our DT curriculum: Our ability to deliver the full DT curriculum is significantly reduced, as we cannot do group cooking in our practical room and do not have the space to work safely using DT tools - we usually work in groups in large spaces to enable access to the required tools, and many of these activities cannot be done safely in a classroom sitting at small tables in pairs.We will adapt food projects so children can use the utensils and equipment in class, with an adult using the practical room to cook/bake food if appropriate to what is being made. We have retained the textile units as these can be delivered safely, although only through individual rather than collaborative projects.
