Yr4 STEMterprise financing and baking Polish bread
In DT, children have set up their own STEMterprise business and have been learning about what is involved in the process of making a food product, from initial design to carrying out market research to then actually buying the ingredients and working within a tight budget. For their supermarket visit, children were only given £5 to buy their ingredients to make Polish bread. Children were able to use their mental calculation knowledge to work out whether they would be within or over budget. Some business groups were over budget but were able to negotiate a deal with another business group to trade some ingredients. Back at school the children then baked their bread - and it was delicious!
