Holocaust Memorial Day 27 January 2020
On the 27th of January, a group of Year 6 pupils had an opportunity to participate in Newham’s Holocaust Memorial Day 2020. In preparation for this event, the children created beautiful pieces of artwork that commemorated the genocides that have occurred around the world since the Holocaust, such as the tragic incidents in Sudan, Bosnia, Rwanda and Cambodia to name but a few. Year 6 also worked collaboratively to create a powerful poem to raise awareness in the need for standing together in times of difficulty.
At the poignant event, the group of children were able to eloquently perform their poems and showcase their artwork. They also enjoyed musical performances from other schools and were fascinated by the orchestral band. Furthermore, the childrem were able to hear from Holocaust and Bosnian genocide survivors who bravely shared their personal life experiences. Towards the end of the event, a peaceful candle lighting ceremony took place where all attendees displayed respect by holding a minute silence.
