Year 2 time travel back to a Victorian classroom
Year 2 travelled back to Victorian times and experienced a classroom in one of the Ragged Schools started by Dr Barnardo to help poor children get an education. The teacher was very strict, and had a cane! We were not allowed to speak unless we were asked a question. Our finger nails were inspected for cleanliness, and we learnt oour lessons off by rote. If we fidgeted we were put in a back straightener or finger stocks. We wrote on slates, not on paper. We are glad we go to school now and not 140 years ago!
At the Ragged School Museum we also met Colin, who helped us to understand all the jobs around the house that children would have to do in Victorian times. We really didn't like the smell of carbolic soap, or the thought of having a bath in the living room in front of the fire!
